Former Leader of the Chorley Conservative Group and recent Chairman of Lancashire County Council, Cllr Alan Cullens has called on the Labour Leader of Chorley Council, Cllr Alistair Bradley to reject calls to break up Chorley Council and have it merged with Preston, Leyland and Ormskirk.
Cllr Alan Cullens commented:
I have proudly served the people of Chorley for over 15 years on both Chorley Council and on the County Council. I have seen the strengths of both organisations, and I am fully aware of the need to work closer together to deliver better services for the people of Chorley.
I have seen some of the media coverage of these unofficial plans and I am calling on the Leader of Chorley Council, Cllr Alistair Bradley to reject calls to break up Chorley Council without the backing of a public referendum of the people of Chorley. If a referendum is good enough for the people of the Ribble Valley and those in Wyre, it is more than good enough for the fantastic people of Chorley too!
It would be criminal to end Chorley Council’s long and proud history and to give away decision-making for our borough to Councillors from Skelmersdale or Preston without the overwhelming backing of the people of Chorley. It cannot and must not happen.
