Letter to the Editor
The latest good news on the economy is that inflation has fallen below 2% for the first time since the economic crash. This follows news in January that the UK has the fastest growing major economy in Europe. Furthermore, at the end of last year, employment reached record levels in the UK, with 845 fewer people seeking job seekers allowance in Chorley than at the peak seen under Labour.
Behind these figures is a point that really matters. More people are working and are therefore able to support themselves and their family. But the real dynamo behind this change is not government, it is the people who create jobs - businesses.
I am currently working with a number of small businesses growing up in Chorley. Ordinary people with extraordinary ideas who are inventing goods and services that will sell. Recently I have also had productive meetings with local business networks and with a charity that teaches local young people about business and inspires and equips them to succeed through enterprise. These dynamic young people are the real green shoots of recovery, in Chorley and elsewhere.
There is still a lot of work to do before our economy is fixed, but the talent and drive of hard working people is getting us there.
