Labour are handing out lectures after the Home Office used a van to publicise a campaign against illegal immigration. Of course, Labour want to talk about the van, because it is easier than engaging with the record of this government.
Conservatives have reduced net immigration by more than a third since 2010. It is still falling. Now we are introducing charges for non-UK citizens who use the NHS, which will protect our precious health service as a national, not a global resource. It is incredible that it must still be explained to Labour that to protect services free at the point of access, you cannot have open borders as well.
Over 13 years of government Labour failed to track movements into the country and failed to remove those who remain illegally. Labour scandalously talked down the prospect of immigration from new EU states and failed to plan for the influx that everyone else saw coming.
After three years of this government, finally we are seeing immigration reduced to sustainable levels. We are protecting the future of the NHS as a national health service, rather than a global drop-in surgery.
More work to do, but further real progress from a government that is delivering economic growth and tax cuts for hard working people.
