ROB LOUGHENBURY, the Conservatives MP candidate for Chorley, is backing Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles, who has slapped down a proposal by Chorley Labour for a new tax on weekly family shops.
Chorley is one of a number of Labour councils across the country setting up legal moves to impose additional business rates on supermarkets and large shops, using the Sustainable Communities Act.
Conservative candidate Rob Loughenbury has said he is pleased that Mr Pickles has announced that the government will not support the new tax and will block it.
Rob said “Increasing taxes on supermarkets will just ramp up food prices and push up the cost of living. It will end up punishing working families seeking the best possible value on their weekly shop.
“Labour’s new tax would also hit jobs and investment. It has been tried In Scotland but is now being abandoned, so why is Chorley Labour chasing yesterdays failed ideas?”
